Copalita Trail

The Mexican adventure that you have been looking for.
Camino Copalita is a 6-hour hike that crosses through 5 different ecosystems, protected by well-organized Zapotec communities. The hike begins at the tallest mountain in the state and finishes in a beautiful beach on the Pacific Coast, near Huatulco.

Day 1. Sunday. Towards the core of the mountains.
Departure from Oaxaca at 9:00 am, approximately 6.5 hour-journey to San Juan Ozolotepec.
SJO is a rural community that has a variety of sustainable economic activities. They make the most of the pinewood, harvest coffee, corn, avocado, tomatoes, and produce honey. They enjoy an amazing scenery of the mountain range. This is a beautiful example of a well-organized, progressive, hard-working community that lives a good-quality life.

Day 2: Monday. Hike duration: 5 hours. Difficulty: basic.
Breakfast at 8:00 am. 2 community guides will take us to the borderline with the San Francisco Ozoltepec community, crossing through usable sustainable forests of pines. Stop to have lunch in the forest at 12:30. Arrival to the SFO community at 3:00 pm.

Day 3: Tuesday. Hike duration: 9-10 hours. Difficulty: ADVANCED.
This hike has beautiful sceneries, which are very interesting due to their biological diversity. We’ll see how different products are grown depending on their climate zone. This is a Zapotec community and the population communicates with their native language, which has the same name.
This day we will descend 2,000 m in a very steep slope until we reach the bottom of the basin, reaching the border of both communities (San Francisco and San José Ozoltepec). San José is a Zapotec community with no vehicular access. As of this moment, we’ll encounter several (simple) river crossings. We’ll have an opportunity to swim.

Day 4: Wednesday. Hike duration: 6-7 hours. Difficulty: intermediate.
We’ll continue our hike through the river, crossing mango trees, coffee plantations, and ceiba trees.
We will arrive to Yaviaga at 4:30 pm; this place is a paradisiac natural spring in San Felipe Lachilló where we’ll be able to swim and visit the cave paintings.

Day 5: Thursday. Hike duration: 6 hours. Difficulty: basic.
We will descend through the river for 3 hours until we reach Blas community, where many bird species live. After eating and resting, we’ll navigate 3 more hours down the river until we get to La Bocana Beach in Huatulco.
End of tour.
All trips depart on Sundays from Oaxaca and arrive on Fridays to Huatulco at 6:00 pm.
If you want to organize your own group (10 people minimum), we can arrange a tour on different dates.

    Alberto

“Its basically all about community. About sharing experiences to benefit a larger amount of people and the environment that provides for us. That’s what I learned on our Mixteca journey through Oaxaca. I came close to the people that live off the land and went home with a different and broader understanding of the region and its culture. Oh, and by the way, the views are jaw dropping.”

    Fernanda

“The hike to the Nevado de Toluca was perfect for me in more than 1 sense. A trip with deep nature connexion, self-awareness, anecdotes, laughter, effort, sighs, valuable silences, and of course, delicious food. I went out of my comfort zone with 10 strangers; as hours passed by, we became great companions. Thanks to Chance to Challenge for allowing everything to fall into place in this amazing way, for more experiences like this one!”

    Diego

“Spectacular, it was very unexpected. I envisioned a normal walk and it turned out to be a magnificent hike.”
